Monasteries, churches and mosques

The monasteries, churches, and mosques of Tatarstan make a big deal of the tourist attractions of the republic. The intensive building of Orthodox Christian monasteries and churches in the area started with the victory of Ivan the Terrible’s army over the Kazan Khanate, but Muslim mosques had been built much earlier. Many of those religious objects were preserved, even during the Soviet Union, restored or rebuilt, many of them nowadays are back to religious service, but some become museums dedicated to preserving history, culture, and traditions of the previous centuries. Good examples of those objects are the John the Baptist monastery, the Raifa Monastery, the Peter and Paul cathedral, the Nikolo-Nisskaya cathedral church, the Kul-Sharif mosque, the Mardzhani mosque, the Repentance mosque, and many others all around the Tatarstan.
