The city of Nizhnekamsk is situated on the left bank of the Kama river, 237 km to the east of Kazan, and 35 km to the west from the railway station Krugloe Pole. The city was founded in 1961 due to the building of a petrochemical plant. In 1966 was transformed from a settlement into a city.
The city is the administrative centre of the Nizhnekamsky district. It is a major centre of the petrochemical industry and the port. There are the Nizhnekamsk city history museum, the Tatar drama theatre, the Youth theatre, “Muncha Tashy” theatre, Satire and Humour theatre, the Chuvash national theatre Tamasha, and the Art production sector.
