The city of Leninogorsk is situated in the south-east of the republic, on the bank of the river Stepnoy Zai, 322 km from Kazan. There is a railway station – Pismyanka. Leninogorsk was founded in the 18th century as a village of Novaya Pismyanka, in 1951-1955 – a settlement, since 1955 – Leninogorsk. The town is the administrative centre of the Leninogorsky district. It is one of the main areas of oil and gas extraction.

Exploring the Roots: The Beginning from Novaya Pismyanka
The history of Leninogorsk traces its roots back to the village of Novaya Pismyanka, founded around 1795 by settlers from the village of Staraya Pismyanka. The latter, a settlement founded by retired soldiers of Russian and Polish origin, as well as Cossacks in the 1730s during the construction of the New Zakamskaya fortified line. Until the 1860s, the residents were classified as state peasants, primarily engaged in agriculture, livestock farming, and flour milling.
A Turning Point: Romashkinskoye Oil Field
Leninogorsk stands as a key hub in the oil industry of the Republic of Tatarstan. The pivotal moment occurred on January 31, 1947, when drilling operations commenced just 7 km from Novaya Pismyanka, leading to the discovery of the Romashkinskoye oil field. This marked a significant turning point in the settlement’s history, transforming it into a major player in the oil industry.
Preserving History: Oil Museum
The city hosts the Oil Museum, established in 1968 within the premises of the Tatburneft oil extraction company. The museum spans over 1000 square meters and stands as the first oil museum in the USSR. With over 1000 exhibits, it showcases the rich history of oil and gas exploration, extraction, and the individuals who shaped the industry.
Monuments and Memorials: Stela and Monuments
Leninogorsk proudly features a rotonda-stela dedicated to the city’s pioneers, as well as monuments honoring M. Gorky and V.I. Lenin. The Heroes’ Alley pays tribute to the city’s heroes, commemorating their contributions.
