The town is situated on the slopes of the Bugulma-Belebeevo heights at the place where the Bugulminka river joins the Zai river. It is 376 km from Kazan. The population is 95,300. There are a railway station and an airport. The town is the centre of the Bugulminskyi district. Bugulma is the centre of Tatarstan's oil extracting region.
